Quality is the key for Ard Glen

24 Jun , 2021

Founded in 1999 by Neville Eager and Pat Flynn, Wicklow based construction company Ard Glen Construction is the focus of this month’s article in Building Ireland magazine.

Both men brought a wealth of experience to the business when first established and together their vast knowledge has helped the company grow over the years.

Specialising in building one-off houses, home extensions and renovations as well as work on commercial buildings has led to the company being involved in many prestigious projects over the years.

Ard Glen Construction General Manager Mark Mahon talks us through the services that they provide and spoke about the construction industry in general during these testing times.

“With regards to the residential sector, the majority of our work would be on one-off projects. The company has developed a reputation for providing a quality service and a high level of workmanship. Working to tight deadlines in a cost-effective manner is something that we thrive on,” stated Mark who has been with the company for the past four years.

“Commercially, we have been involved in numerous projects also and one of the most recent ones was the refurbishment of the Fleet Street Hotel in Temple Bar. This involved us moving the reception from the first floor to the ground floor, where a TGI Fridays had been located for a number of years. It was a complex project given the environment we were working in, but both the client and ourselves were pleased with the end result.”

Cost has become more of a focal point and the aim by any homeowner, sub-contractor, builder, developer, engineer, architect and so on is to get the work done to a high standard, but within budget.

And with that in mind, Mark revealed that they are conscious of getting the job done to the highest standard and within the budget allocated.

“We would engage with the client’s QS and our own QS to highlight any extra cost that may occur at the start of the project and then the client knows what the cost will be.”

Ard Glen Construction’s catchment area includes Wicklow, Dublin and parts of Kildare and working in the capital means that they have been involved in many projects on listed buildings, which bring about their own issues.

“We would have a lot of experience working on listed buildings. We have developed our service where we use traditional materials and techniques as we conserve, restore and rebuild period and listed buildings. The aim in many cases is to transform a building into its former glory.

“This can only be achieved by working closely with everyone involved including conservation officers, planners, architects, right down to the sub contractors that we use, everyone has to be working together.”

Ardglen Construction is a leader in providing high end construction services to their clients by creating successful partnerships with them throughout the construction process. Their goal is to exceed their expectations through exceptional performance by each member of their construction team.

“There are 12 employed directly by the company, while there is a core of sub-contractors that are used a lot. Some of the employees would be here years and the experience they bring is invaluable, while the sub-contractors are people that the owners know and trust.

“We are working in the high-end of the market, so it is important to deliver every project to the highest standard possible, which we feel we have been doing.”

The proof that they are doing something right can be seen in the fact that most of their work is through referrals or from repeat customers, which in itself is a testament to the level of workmanship produced by the company.

“Most of our work would come through word of mouth to be honest. A large share of our clients would be repeat customers, and they know that we will do our best to deliver every time.”

Of course, 2020 has brought about its own challenges none more so that the current pandemic that has gripped every country in the world, let alone Ireland and Mark revealed that they are following the CIF guidelines to the letter.

“We have been following the guidelines, the safety of the employees and anyone connected with one of our projects is paramount. On any of the large scale projects that we are working on, we would stagger the sub contractors so as there is not too many of them on site at any given time.”

Mark concluded by stressing that the experience they bring to any project is invaluable and the company ethos has always been to put the client first.

“We are confident in our ability to provide our client with the best solution for them, whether that be for our commercial or residential clients and no matter the size of the project, our standards remain the same.”
