With an unrivalled reputation for excellence, Doyle Bros Construction is one of Cork’s premier building and civil engineering contractors, delivering a full range of professional residential and commercial construction solutions on time, within budget and to the highest standards. Building Ireland spoke to David Doyle to find out more about this exceptional family business.

In the Rebel County, the surname Doyle is synonymous with building excellence, siblings David, Mark and Darren having forged a stellar reputation for completing all types of construction projects to the highest standards over the past 13 years and counting. Established in 2007, Doyle Bros Construction provide industry-leading new build residential, renovation and extension solutions and are also increasingly active within the commercial market, having developed particular expertise working on retail and education projects.

Combining value engineering, effective construction practices and good old-fashioned hard graft, Doyle Bros invariably meet or exceed client expectations. This has enabled them to foster long-term partnerships / relationships and a reputation for quality workmanship that has seen many projects secured through word of mouth and positive referrals.

Satisfied clients and partners include Aldi, Cork City & County Councils, Franciscan Well Brewery and SuperHomes to mention just a handful. With the family name prominent in the company title, the Doyle siblings literally stake their name and reputation on every project undertaken.

“We always work to a very high standard because our reputation is our most valuable asset and it’s our family name that’s over the door and on the vans,” co-founder and director David Doyle confirms. “Our family has worked in construction in Cork down through the years and we’ve developed a very good reputation, which we are determined to enhance even further by delivering high-quality projects every time. Even though we started the business during a recession, we’ve always been busy. It was a good time to set up a construction business and to test ourselves. Setting out in 2007, you had to be on top of your game and we’ve remained focussed on never letting our standards slip.”

Indeed, even though the Irish economy finds itself in uncertain territory once more due to the havoc being wreaked globally by the novel coronavirus pandemic, Doyle Bros Construction continue to have a healthy order book ahead of them. “We’ve a good bit of work ahead of us and the phone is ringing as we speak,” David continues. “There’s plenty going on in Cork, thankfully. We’ve done work for Aldi Ireland, the local authorities, Franciscan Well Brewery and we’ve also taken on a couple of retrofit projects for SuperHomes Ireland in Tipperary, extensions and renovations to bring those homes up to an ‘A’ energy rating.”

In recent years, Doyle Bros Construction have also delivered some major school renovation works within Cork county including new classroom extensions and renovations to the existing building at St Michael’s School, Blackrock, new access and parking to the main entrance (and all associated site works) at The North Presentation Primary School and renovation work at Innishannon National School.

In residential, meanwhile, Doyle Bros Construction boast a proven track record for outstanding workmanship on bespoke, turnkey new builds, which are completed in-house from start to finish, as well as redesigns, extensions and remodels, renovations, new kitchens, driveways, patios, external insulation, etc., etc.

“We’re busy in both commercial and private work and it’s good to have a nice mix of both so that you have some security if one area goes quiet for a while. We use a team of up to 20 regular subcontractors, who are highly skilled in all the trades. These are tried and trusted subbies who we have worked with for years. They know the high standards we expect and they work to the same exacting standards as ourselves.”

As members of HomeBond, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), the Construction Industry Register Ireland (CIRI) and the Construction Industry Federation (CIF), Doyle Bros Construction possess the experience, expertise and unswerving dedication to professionally deliver private and commercial projects ranging from €110,000 up to €5million. The three brothers adopt a fully transparent, proactive, hands-on approach to overseeing the business and make themselves available to clients 24/7. Mobile phones are always switched on an issues are dealt with promptly and efficiently.

Regarding the key to the ongoing success and viability of this family business over the past 13 years, David agrees that ultimately it all comes down to delivering high-quality, client-focussed solutions: “It’s all about doing a good job at the end of the day,” he notes. “We’ve earned a solid reputation for quality work in both the private and commercial markets as well as for local industry.

“Extensions and renovations are getting bigger and in a lot of cases it’s almost like a second home you are building on. We’re very happy with the work we’ve done so far for SuperHomes as we hit the target there and it could potentially open up another area of the market to us. Those projects were about airtightness, bringing homes from zero rating up to the desired ‘A’ rating and we proved that we could achieve that.”

While Doyle Bros Construction has been a superb success story to date, the directors are only too aware of the fact that a building contractor – no matter how big or small – is only as good as his last project. To this end, there’s no room for complacency and David points out that, as the business grows, the highest standards of excellence will be maintained:

“Going forward, our plan is to hopefully continue growing the business year on year, but obviously without compromising on quality,” the personable Cork contractor concludes. “Projects are getting bigger and the average value of them is increasing, but we don’t want to lose control of things. We will keep providing a very keen personal touch.

“We’re constantly upskilling and we’re getting a lot of recommendations coming back to us from clients, engineers and architects. Word of mouth is vitally important in construction but, as I’ve said. you really do have to keep your standards high when it’s your name that’s on the side of the vans”.
