New Komatsu PW118MR-11 Wheeled Midi Excavator tackles cramped streets and narrow laneways

17 Dec , 2018

Komatsu distributor McHale Plant Sales has introduced the all-new PW118MR-11 midi wheeled excavator – a machine said by their General Manager, Denis McGrath, after his first test drive, to be ‘very high-spec and really impressive’.

Described by Komatsu as a quick and precise tight-tail midi excavator, the PW118MR-11 is driven by a powerful EU Stage IV compliant 72,5 kW (97,2 HP) @ 2.050 rpm engine that burns 6% less fuel.

With an ‘unrivalled’ compactness and lifting performance, its combination of power, control and convenient dimensions make it an ideal choice for simple excavating tasks and heavy-duty lifting applications in cramped streets, narrow laneways, on-road and sewer-construction work.

Its vital statistics include 13,800kg weight (operating weight 12.800 kg to 13.900 kg), 2-piece offset boom, outriggers and blade, with 4-wheel drive and dash-mounted quick-change switching between 2-wheel steering, 4-wheel steering and Crab action modes and activation/deactivation of auto axle lock mechanism.

Replacement for a unit that McHale Plant Sales claims to have been ‘the class-leading workhorse of the utilities contracting and equipment rental sectors’, its lowest-in-class consumption equips the PW118MR-11 to work in low-emissions and environmentally-sensitive zones.

Sturdy, 13 percent more stable, and with a higher lifting capacity, the PW118MR-11 has the capacity to deliver exceptional performance in tight spaces, thanks in part to an integrated heavy counterweight with no extension of tail protrusion. Of benefit too is its standard-fit Komvision system that projects a bird’s eye view of the machine’s surroundings on to a large monitor screen.

Other goodies amongst its many features include a new ‘Attachment Economy’ mode that also helps lower fuel consumption and emissions, a choice of up to six working modes, an all-new cruise control function for on-road travel, and a revised hydraulic layout that improves speed and acceleration on flat ground and slopes.

An advanced electronic control system manages airflow rate, fuel injection, combustion parameters and after-treatment functions, while an integrated SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system reduces NOx emissions.

Komtrax telematics protects the unit against misuse whilst delivering top fleet management and support, and maximum efficiency and uptime, while a revised operator select system better matches machine performance to the application.

Ticking boxes on all fronts, its new viscous fan clutch reduces power loss and engine load when maximum cooling is not required while reducing fuel consumption and in-cab noise.

Proportional control joysticks are standard, allowing precise operation of attachments with comfort and ease, while the new Neutral Detection System reduces the risk of inadvertent operation. Another fuel saver is its new auto-idle shutdown.

Its ROPS-certified reinforced box structure cab – with rubber isolation dampers for low vibration – provides a comfortable work environment with safe and quick access/egress.

Operator features include a Bluetooth connected radio, with pre-sets and USB input, and two 12-volt power ports. An enhanced high-resolution 7” widescreen colour monitor displays information in 25 languages for global support, with information on fluid levels, eco guidance, operational records, fuel consumption and utilisation data.
