1 Aug , 2017

Tipperary Groundworks Ltd (TGW Ltd) celebrates their 20th anniversary this year as the company continues to deliver an excellent service to a large customer base. Established in February 1997, by Johnny and Joe Ryan who had many years’ experience in groundworks behind them, the company has gone from strength to strength over the years.

“We worked in Germany, Holland and the U.K for over ten years before deciding to come home and set up our own business and twenty years later, we are still going strong,” said Johnny. TGW Ltd specialise in a wide range of services that include bulk excavation, site clearance, rock excavation, all groundworks including drainage and installation of underground services, substructure works, concrete works, plant hire and demolition works.

A civil engineering firm located in Thurles, TGW Ltd have the expertise to carry out their wide range of services to the highest standard possible. In order to do this, they have not only an extensive, modern fleet of machinery, but they also have the skilled manpower to utilise the machinery to the best of its capabilities. This expertise and experience helps position them favourably when it comes to providing high quality services for Ireland’s civil works industry. To carry out their range of services to the standard their customers expect, TGW Ltd are continuously investing in their business as the fleet is upgraded on a regular basis.

“We have an extensive range of plant here that we generally upgrade every year and a half or so. We have dump trucks excavators, road sweepers etc. All of which come at great expense, but it is essential to have modern, efficient machinery to carry out the work. In order to maximise the potential of their employees, a huge emphasis is place on staff training and development which is not only beneficial for the employee, but the company as a whole.

“Our commitment to providing high quality services means that a great emphasis is placed on staff development and training at all levels which creates a competent culture in our company.”

Johnny feels that it is essential to ensure that the staff are well looked after in order to get the best out of them.

“All our operators are fully CSCS trained and highly skilled. Our staff are paid CIF rates and are members of the CIF pension and sick pay scheme.”

TGW Ltd are very much a nationwide firm with projects ongoing in Cork, Dublin and Waterford at the moment as Johnny revealed that they carry out a lot of specialised work.

“We would do a good bit of work for pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizers and Johnson & Johnson. This would be specialised work as there are a lot of regulations to be adhered too.”

In recent years, TGW Ltd have successfully completed a 2.5m strip out of a four floor building at the DePuy pharmaceutical plant in a Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork in just 12 weeks. They also completed a warehouse extension and new car park to the Jansen site in Cork, while site works were completed on the Pfizer DS2 project in Grangecastle, Co. Dublin.

Obviously, taking massive pride in delivering on all projects within the set time frame and on budget is one of their priorities. Johnny stated that one of the keys to their success is the ‘hands on’ approach adopted by them on each and every one of the projects that they are involved in.

“We would pride ourselves on expertise gained through“hands on”experience, not only in site activities but with project management, estimating, surveying and staff management.”

Over the years and as trust has grown, TGW has developed a strong working relationship with the clients so much so, that they know what the customers wants ever before they do.

“We work with the client closely and on occasion if they are unsure what is needed, we can advise on what would be the best course of action to take. We have a good relationship with our clients and we achieve this by our progressive attitude and commitment to high levels of safety, quality and environmental performance. We value the relationships we build not only with our clients, but also with our suppliers and staff.”

Health and safety is paramount as TGW Ltd take great pride in their safety record and this is an area that they continuously focus on in order to maintain their high standards.

“H&S is such a key area now, everyone has to be properly trained and the focus is to keep everyone that is on one of our projects safe.”

The company has grown considerably over the years and this is an area that management have been keen to work on.

“We look to expand in certain areas and build the business that way. We are very busy for the remainder of the year, but we are also keen to explore new areas of work with clients, especially those with whom we can develop longer term working relationships.”
