Established in 1990 by Sean McKiernan and his wife Ann, S&A Construction are a general contracting firm with expertise and experience in providing a wide range of services, from civil engineering and refurbishment / renovation works and consulting to groundworks, demolition and site clearance. The family-run business directly employs 20 highly qualified and experienced professionals, including carpenters, tilers, plasterers, machine operators and labourers, and also uses regular sub-contractors to deliver projects of the highest calibre.

S&A Construction offers a unique service combining superior building expertise and strong management on all of their projects. With a reputation for integrity and high standards of workmanship, they provide a high-quality product and service as well as value-for-money.

At S&A Construction, they believe their work is only as good as their last job. In an industry where reputation is a precious commodity, they make every effort at every stage of the project to ensure clients’ needs and expectations are not only met but exceeded. Over the past three decades, the company has continually demonstrated an ability to deliver projects on time and within budget whilst maintaining the highest standards of quality, workmanship and safety.

“We cover the full spectrum, from large extensions and refurb jobs to one-off house builds, and everything in between. We’re involved in the commercial, industrial, hotel and leisure, education and residential sectors,” explains managing director Sean, whose son John also works in the family business.

“We have a wealth of experience, and work and collaborate with the client every step of the way. Our reputation in the trade is second to none.”

S&A Construction’s portfolio of completed projects is testimony to the success of their approach, knowledge and capability. The company has been associated with some landmark projects in Co. Cavan and in Dublin, most notably Hotel Kilmore, Slieve Russell Hotel, Killykeen Forest Park, Clontarf Castle and Arthaus Hotel just off St Stephen’s Green.

In 2016, S&A Construction were appointed to construct a fully-serviced two-storey extension to Hotel Kilmore near Cavan town. The expansion included 36 bedrooms, bridal suite, a private gym, new function room, administration offices and connection to public service works.

Each room was fully furnished with an interior package that is simply the finest available. The contractor created many local jobs during the construction phase and sourced all products locally and within Ireland. The project, which was completed three months ahead of schedule, also saw the lobby and reception area transformed with a most stylish refurbishment. The works included the strip-out of the existing furniture and fittings, and the remodelling of the interior.

S&A Construction also carried out a complete refurbishment of the Hotel Kilmore bar and toilets in 2019. The bar was elegantly decorated using the finest fabrics, lighting and wood to create a blend of comfort and sophisticated finishes in a truly relaxing atmosphere.

The Ballinagh-based company was also appointed to renovate, transform and modernise the lobby area and function rooms of The Slieve Russell Hotel in Ballyconnell in 2017. The end product was a magnificent new arrivals area leading to the function room, Shannon, Erne and Woodlands Suites.

New ceilings, heating and ventilation was installed and the rooms were rewired. In the function room, exquisite carpets and chandeliers were fitted. The chandeliers generate a warm, inviting atmosphere with new LED lighting cascading from the ceilings which can be changed in colour to match themes and moods of a function, on the day or night, at any time, courtesy of a touch screen. In addition, a new reception area was created in the leisure centre.

S&A Construction has completed a number of projects in Killykeen Forest Park, which lies on the shores of Lough Oughter and is a very scenic area of Co. Cavan. The most recent of these involved the refurbishment of all 28 log cabins and lake houses in the holiday village. Sean and his team also erected a new shop, clubhouse, spa and treatment room. All of the buildings are beautiful timber-framed with elegant, voluminous spaces which are designed to articulate the timber
frame.

The ESB project involved the complete refurbishment of all the offices, meeting rooms and toilets, and the fitting out of a new kitchen area. New floors, walls and ceilings were also fitted and asbestos was safely removed while replacing a new roof on the entire building. The Bruskey Aughaloora Community Centre, which was completed in December 2018, consists of a main hall, meeting room, kitchen, toilets and car parking facilities. Outside works to Murphs’ Bistro in Butlerbridge included a spacious patio area with a glass railing and strip lighting that created a beautiful zone for al-fresco dining and also the car park area had aco drains fitted and a new tarmacadam surface. Health & Safety has always been of paramount importance to the company and never more so than in the wake of COVID-19.

“During the lockdown, our staff undertook training courses aimed at reducing negative impacts from COVID-19 on the construction site. We take the Health & Safety of our staff and others very seriously,” concludes Sean, who is grateful for the support and repeat business he receives from a long list of satisfied clients.
