For over three-and-a-half decades, EMP Furniture Manufacturers Ltd. have been designing, manufacturing, supplying and installing bespoke furniture to all sectors of construction, including education, healthcare and hospitality. We travelled to Williamstown in County Galway and met up with Derek Deane – one of three brothers who oversee the market-leading business – to find out more

Established in 1980, EMP Furniture Manufacturers Ltd. specialises in the design, manufacture, supply and installation of bespoke furniture. As a family-owned and -operated business, the company has grown steadily and significantly since its inception to become true a market leader, completing many high-profile projects in the education, hospitality and healthcare sectors.

From small residential fitted furniture to largescale industrial or commercial projects, they have the capacity, experience and flexibility to handle all requirements, continuously leading the way in terms of innovation, quality and service.

EMP liaise with clients prior, during and after project completion to ensure total customer satisfaction. They offer a complete conception-to-turn-key solution, encompassing design, manufacture, delivery, fitting and finishing.

Regular investment has allowed the County Galway based company to purchase state-of-the-art machinery, which enables them to fulfil even the most challenging projects with a minimum of fuss and a guarantee of perfect results.

They manufacture, supply, and install an extensive range of cubicles, vanities, IPS panelling, post-formed components, lockers and benching to leisure, commercial, industrial, medical and educational facilities, while EMP Education is an expanding division within the company manufacturing tried-and-tested quality furniture for the education market and working in tandem with education authorities, professional advisors and main contractors on a range of projects including science labs, home economics rooms, libraries, IT rooms and lecture and conference rooms.

Meanwhile EMP Furniture Manufacturers Ltd. have completed many healthcare and hospitality new-build and refurbishment projects, including receptions and nurse stations, public areas, kitchens, stores, maternity suites, restaurants, bars, hotels and leisure facilities.

Sister company Empire Solid Surfacing manufactures a unique and innovative material (boasting the appearance of stone combined with the strength and reliability of a manmade product) that is popular with architects and designers, its pleasant touch and smooth finish lending itself to multiple applications.

Pat Deane set the business up in 1980,” Derek notes. “He had worked for about ten years prior to that, manufacturing on a small scale, and EMP Furniture Manufacturers developed out of that. He started off doing private and residential work before moving into the bespoke, commercial side of it, which is what we specialise in exclusively today.”

Operating in a specialist, niche market, EMP have provided outstanding solutions for almost four decades, navigating through some challenging times for the construction sector, and the sheer quality of their workmanship has seen them emerge as undisputed market leaders in their chosen field.

Their strong, functional built-in furniture has enhanced a plethora of high-profile developments nationwide, including the likes of St James’ Hospital Dublin, Allergan Pharmaceuticals Westport, Ben Dunne Gyms, Clonmel Mental Health Centre, Coliste Ailigh School Letterkenny, Critical Care Unit at Limerick Regional Hospital, Ericsson Software Communications.

Referring to the unique skills deployed to craft bespoke furniture, Derek points out that “there is no such thing as a standard unit. Everything is made to measure and designed and manufactured to the highest quality.

“Most of the work is carried out for main contractors, both for new builds and refurbs. We offer the full package of solutions in-house, from initial design using the latest CAD systems through to installations. We oversee every project all the way through from conception to completion and stand over all of our work.”

Gainful employment is generated for a team of 22, all of whom are extremely skilled, experienced and motivated. “We guarantee absolute dedication to every aspect of each job.” Derek concludes. “We provide quality products and high levels of service, always to budget and within programme. Each of those aspects are key and we tick all those boxes.

“By doing quality work on a consistent scale, we have developed a lot of good contacts and thankfully we are extremely busy, with a lot of prestigious projects to look forward to as we speak.”
