New Komatsu Midi breaks cover ahead of Irish launch

12 Mar , 2018

With first models already available in Ireland – ahead of its official debut in April at the Intermat Fair in Paris – the new Komatsu PC80MR-5 is a model that perfectly illustrates what happens when superb design comes together with excellent comfort and superior safety to create an eye–watering challenger in what is a highly competitive midi digger sector.

Crammed with new and improved features, the Komatsu PC80MR-5 is powered by an electronically controlled Komatsu 4D98E-5SFB Stage IIIB engine, with DPF and a net horsepower of 46.2 kW (62 hp). Designed with the customer in mind, its most visually appealing features include an integrated counterweight and tight tail-swing radius coupled with a machine-hugging swing boom that couple to make it ideal for work in confined areas and urban environments. With operating weights ranging from 8,000 to 8,240 kg, its more environmentally-friendly engine maintains the proven performance of the previous series whilst delivering an upwards of 10% lower fuel consumption.

Said by McHale Plant Sales director, John O’Brien to deliver ‘improved versatility, manoeuvrability, comfort and low operating costs’, the new PC80MR-5 is described as ‘a perfect tool for most confined-area jobsites and for construction, utility, landscaping or similar applications’.

Optimal Performance
Legendary Komatsu reliability and tough design solutions further reduced machine downtime with standard fuel-cutting features that include an auto-decelerator and idle shutdown. Newly developed hydraulic electronic controls also optimise machine performance and deliver lower consumption, whatever the job. Six selectable working modes – a concept derived from higher end units – promote relaxed and profitable operations, while its proportional lines deliver improved productivity and versatility when working with attachments.  A new strong blade design and profile – with its enhanced shape, height and length – requires less repair resulting in less downtime.

First Class Comfort
A newly designed cab and interior boosts operator comfort levels whilst projecting an even more modern image. Inside and out, the new machine has been redesigned for more functionality and a more modern look and feel. Access is improved thanks to a new, hinged door design. A high-resolution, multi- functional 3.5” LCD colour monitor adds to its ease of use and technological appeal. A key feature borrowed from higher end units is the ability to display maintenance information on the cab monitor. Air conditioning is standard and a dial type fuel control further increases operator comfort, control and convenience

Peace Of Mind Safety
A Neutral Detection System control lever is an industry-leading safety feature that, with an engine shutdown secondary switch and seat belt caution indicator, works to deliver peace of mind. Fast and easy transportability is made possible thanks to the provision of easy-to-use, tie-down brackets. Another standard, peace-of-mind feature is seen in the latest KOMTRAX telematics system that utilises 3G communications to deliver unrivalled management and support, whilst protecting the machine against misuse and guaranteeing maximum efficiency and uptime.

Ireland
In Ireland, it is expected that the new PC80MR-5 will find a ready market amongst rentals and the burgeoning utilities sectors, competing for the affections of those in search of a reliable, long-life machine that will retain a high resale value. Included in that mix also is a rejuvenated house building and construction sector and a not-to-be-overlooked community of landscape contractors. Additional niche markets are said by McHale Plant Sales to include ‘drainage contractors, graveyard operatives, forestry managers and suchlike’.
