MMT Builders – for all your construction needs

16 Sep , 2021

Established in 2004, MMT Builders Ltd is a leading general building contractor based in Fethard, Co. Tipperary and specialising in one-off house building, listed building restoration, social housing and Government projects.

The company has earned an outstanding reputation for building quality and excellence, and continues to go from strength to strength under the guidance of Matthew ‘Mark’ Tynan who is a fourth-generation carpenter. Mark worked in carpentry, steel fixing and shuttering in England, Holland, France, Germany and Belgium for 12 years before returning home to Tipperary to set up his own construction firm.

“My father Mattie, grandfather who was also Mattie, and great-grandfather, Watt Tynan, were all carpenters before me,” he explains.

“It’s in the blood. Even my daughter, Amy, got a Distinction in Carpentry in her Leaving Cert. She has since gone on to receive an Honours Degree in Biopharmaceutical Chemistry from NUI Galway and is currently studying for a Bachelor of Science in Applied Biology and Biopharmaceutical Science.

“While it’s unlikely that she will pursue a career in carpentry, it could be a runner for my youngest son, Adam, who is 15 and is showing a keen interest. It would be nice to keep the family tradition going,” adds Mark, who is married to Elizabeth and whose other son, Darren, is working in the mining industry in Australia.

Mark admits his business was slow to take off and might not have survived the economic crash of over a decade ago had he not struck up an excellent working relationship with Tipperary County Council which endures to this day.

“I’ve been working for Tipperary County Council since 2005 when I saw an ad in the paper looking for someone to refurbish a social house in Fethard. I replied to it and the rest, as they say, is history,” he says.

“The recession hit a couple of years later and you were glad of any work you got. I did wall and floor tiling and lots of other odd jobs to stay in business. I’ll always be grateful to Tipperary County Council because they awarded me two social housing projects at the height of the recession. The first was a 12-house development worth €1.6 million in my home village of Moyglass, which is three miles from Fethard, and the second was a 20-house development in Fethard worth €2.75 million two years later in 2011.”

Superior workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of MMT Builders. Health & Safety is at the core of the business, and never more so than in this COVID-19 age. From concept to completion, Mark and his team are with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs, and that there are no hidden or extra costs involved.

Whether your next project is a new build, extension, refurbishment or restoration, MMT Builders’ one-stop shop approach will ensure that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable and hassle-free. The Tipperary contractor’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from satisfied clients.

“Reputation is everything in this game. If you have a good reputation, the work will come your way. All of our work is secured through word of mouth and recommendations from architects. And we get a lot of repeat business which is always a good sign.”

“We sub-contract out everything. We do, however, have our own plant which includes two teleporters, a new lorry, a tractor, mini diggers and scaffolding. By employing highly-skilled people, working closely with leading architects and engineers, and using only the very best building products, we’re able to deliver the highest quality construction to our customers.”

Fully certified and insured, MMT Builders provides a range of construction services to the private and public sectors. The contractor has completed numerous one-off new house builds, ranging from 900 sq. ft. to 5,500 sq. ft. in size. The largest one-off house Mark has built to date was a 5,500 sq. ft. eight-bedroom luxury dwelling near Thurles.

MMT Builders has also completed classroom extensions to New Ross CBS, Thurles CBS, Presentation Thurles and Strangsmill Primary School in Kilmacow, Co. Kilkenny on behalf of the Department of Education. In addition, the builder has completed many housing adaptation projects for older people or people with a disability which are funded by LEADER programme grants.

Mark has worked with Clonmel-based Grade A conservation architect Margaret Quinlan on several listing building restoration projects, including Borris House in Carlow and DW Parke chemist in Clonmel.

“As part of an ongoing conservation project at Borris House, we’ve turned an 18th century listed barn into 13-doubleroom ensuite accommodation units. We’re also refurbishing the existing timber shop front and curved glass of DW Parke,” he continues.

“We’ve carried out emergency repair works to St Carthage Cathedral in Lismore, which was originally built in 1679, while I’ve purchased a 300-year-old bakery in Cahir with its own water wheel feature that I plan on restoring to its former glory. We’ve also undertaken restoration works at Dovea House in Thurles, which is another listed building and is home to Dovea Genetics.”

MMT Builders recently handed over a €960,000 social housing project to Tipperary County Council in Gortnahoe and has a number of other exciting projects in the pipeline. A generous supporter of local organisations and charities, Mark would like to take this opportunity to thank his clients, suppliers, sub-contractors and design teams for their continued support.
