Mahon Ltd: efficiency personified

Galway based Mahon Ltd operates a comprehensive range of cost effective construction services for large and small scale groundworks projects for private and public clients, within various business sectors such as commercial, industrial, retail, residential, health and education.

With their highly experienced and professional management team, they deliver first class projects for both the private and public sector clients. The company structure enables them to complete projects of varying sizes and complexity, including infrastructure work. The highly skilled and qualified team consists of an experienced directly employed workforce with the addition of knowledgeable sub-contractors that have worked for the company and have a proven track record in the groundworks and civil engineering industry.

Mahon Ltd has established a proven track record in groundworks and major civil engineering projects, ranging from turnkey construction projects to social and private housing developments. More increasingly, they find themselves in leading roles as the main or sub-contractor.

They have earned an enviable reputation as a quality provider, solving complex problems but moreover, for successfully delivering projects on either a stand-alone basis or as part of a consortium, offering a larger package to major contractors, local authorities and consulting engineers. Their one stop shop approach is supplemented by an extensive training & development programme ensuring that all site staff “get it right first time”.

The management and contract team have experience in all aspects of civil engineering and have a wealth of resources to call on including; their In House Training, Health & Safety and Surveying Departments, enabling them to meet all requirements demanded on any size of contract.

Director Kieran Cox spoke to Building Ireland about the services that they provide and what makes them such a success.

“We use our extensive engineering knowledge and management skills along with our highly trained operatives to deliver our projects safely. We carry out Civil Engineering works for Local Authorities, Hospitals, Private Clients and Main Contractors.

“We understand the importance of laying the foundations correctly which will result in a successful project. We have delivered challenging contracts throughout Ireland, whether your project is time critical or suffers from difficult access we have the knowledge and expertise to deliver the works safely, on budget and to a high standard.”

Offering such services as project management where experienced site management staff to manage projects from pricing stage all the way to project completion. Site clearance and development which includes bulk excavation, demolition, rock breaking, cut & fill operations, disposal off-site to licensed facilities in accordance to their environmental policy and within the EPA guidelines.

Drainage:  All types of drainage: foul, storm, rainwater, including attenuation tanks, petrol interceptors, rain harvesting systems, water mains and ducting.

Concrete works: Strip foundations, raft foundations, finished floors, lift shafts, retaining walls and all reinforced concrete works. Landscaping & Finishing Works: footpaths, paving, kerbing, tarmac, topsoil, landscape fixtures.

To carry out all these services, Mahon Ltd operate an extensive range of plant and this includes Excavators: Daewoo Doosan 3ton – 25ton (with breakers), Hitachi 75 zero tail swing, D6 Dozer. Dumpers: A25 dump-truck, 9 ton site dumpers, 6 ton site dumper, track dumper. Other: Bomag 138 roller, block grab and pallet forks. Larger plant is readily available as required, while other tools are Pipe Lasers, Rotating Lasers, Dual Axis Rotating Laser along with all required small tools, con-saws, etc.

“We would invest in our plant on a regular basis, while we would have access to any type of machinery that we need. The machinery would be between 2007 and 2015 and we have our own workshop where we carry out any maintenance work or repairs.”

Of course, the success of the business would not be feasible without a reliable customer base and Kieran admitted that they are fortunate to work alongside some top clients.

“Yeah, we would have a core base of six or seven clients that we have done a lot of work for over the years. These would include Tinnelly Construction, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Stewart, Galway County Council, J.J Rhatigan, ABM, Purcell, Valeo and Kelmin, while other previous clients include: Sean Maloney & Associates, Tom McHugh Builders and Tuam Rugby Club to name just a few.

“We have a number of current projects ongoing at the moment including a school in Cloughennis for ABM, Medtronic (Sisk), Esb ducting (Carey Developments), new pitch and clubhouse for Dynamo Blues Soccer club, while we are continuously tendering for other work.”

Mahon Ltd has many years experience behind them and Kieran joined Finbar Mahon as a director of the company in recent times as they look to progress the business even further.
