Leading the way in commercial windows and doors

7 Apr , 2020

As one of Ireland’s premier one-stop shop for the design, manufacturing and fitting of bespoke commercial and domestic windows and doors, Mahon Windows is enjoying a period of unprecedented growth. To accommodate an exponential rise in demand for their products and services, the business has relocated to a state-of-the-art new facility in Athlone, at the heart of the midlands. Building Ireland got an update from managing director Trevor Mahon.

In recent years, Mahon Windows has forged a stellar reputation as an industry-leading manufacturer and installer of commercial windows, doors and curtain wall screens, providing their cutting-edge expertise to a wide range of prestigious projects for a who’s who of main contractors.

As their reputation for excellence continues to spread, the company remains very much on an upward trajectory. According to director Trevor Mahon, they are in the midst of a tremendous period of growth: “We’ve doubled in size over the past five years,” he notes. “We outgrew our facility in the Belmont Ferbane area [County Offaly] where we’d been for the previous 19 years, and have relocated to new premises in Athlone in 2018.”

Boasting a vastly-increased capacity as well as improved access to key markets, the new base has greatly facilitated Mahon Windows’ ability to meet rising demand for their much-sought-after range of windows and doors. “We got exactly what we were looking for,” continues Trevor, who has been MD of the family business for a decade. “It’s in a great location just off the motorway. We have new showrooms and also purchased a lot of new machinery. Everything was upgraded and the staff have been trained and upskilled accordingly.

“As we’re only 400 yards off the motorway, Dublin” is less than one hour of a commute which has been very beneficial as that’s where we are most active at the moment, despite several projects ongoing continuously in the Midlands region.”

A family-run, locally-based Irish-owned company established by Michael Mahon 33 years ago, Mahon Windows manufacture all of their products in their purpose-built, state-of-the-art factory. The latest, cutting-edge equipment and software is complemented by a very experienced, dedicated and highly-skilled workforce, unswerving commitment to quality products and service at the very heart of the business.

Mahon Windows have more than three decades of experience in the marketplace and have the capacity to successfully and cost-effectively deliver any commercial project, from shopfronts, schools, OPW work, primary care units, hotels and nursing homes to largescale office blocks and industrial buildings.

The WICLINE series of commercial windows provides the best means of producing complex yet attractive window designs that offer a high level of functionality and precise dimensioning. This range includes multi-level concepts for security and for both thermal and noise insulation, whilst WICSTAR offers a high-quality range of fittings. The extensive system variety offers a wide range of options for inwards and outwards opening, as well as various design versions.

For the commercial doors market, WICSTYLE provides options and functions that cannot be beaten. Whether it is the door to a private house, a large entrance to an administrative building or hotel, a fire protection door, emergency exit in a school or a simple functional door for a manufacturing building, the technically-mature WICSTYLE profile systems – with their numerous opening types, versions and expansion options – enable the client to realise tailor-made door solutions for any situation.

And, for curtain wall screens, WICTEC is an overall concept of modern-day architecture that reconciles the elements of heat storage, air conditioning, light provision and fire and noise protection within a single façade design. From the classic stick system façade to unitised window and structural glazing façades, clients can select, design and produce all conceivable variants to the highest quality standards and in line with their personal requirements to achieve bespoke solutions, with diversity and compatibility guaranteed.

Mahon Windows design, manufacture and install a wide range of uPVC and aluminium windows as well as composite and uPVC doors, all custom made and with a ten-year guarantee. Their current generation of windows is the best performing yet – immensely strong and secure, yet attractive, noise- and draught-proof, energy efficient and built to last.

Meanwhile, Mahon Windows construct and fit front and rear doors; patio doors and French window doors; doors with side-lights; and doors with glazed panels, offering a variety of widths, heights, colours, contours and designs. “A multitude of new products and different varieties have become available over the last decade and we have diversified into a lot of new products,” Trevor states. “We use a German Wicona system and architects really like it.”

While the commercial market has taken off for Mahon Windows, they have also maintained a strong presence in the domestic windows and doors market. “We have the space, staff and capacity to design, manufacture and fit any windows or doors that an architect or client might want,” the affable company MD adds. “Most of our business comes from repeat clients and word of mouth. Often, you’d have the same architects on different jobs and they’d put our name forward to be nominated to supply and fit the windows and doors.”

Some high-profile projects completed recently include design, manufacture and fitting of the new main entrance at the five-star Conrad Hotel, a new extension and front entrance to the Castleknock Hotel & Golf Club, windows for the new malls and shopfronts at the Royal Hibernian Way off Grafton Street and an ongoing project on the Microsoft building in Grange Castle.

More and more, Mahon Windows are attracting prestigious projects: “It’s nice to have these jobs on your CV. We used high-end products on those projects and when you do the work well you will have positive recommendations. It’s all about meeting the requirements of the design team. This can take time, organisation and patience to get it right but we have built up the experience and expertise to deliver any project, large or small.”

The company’s excellence was recognised at this year’s Small Firms Association Awards at the RDS in March where, from an initial field of close to 1,000, they made the final shortlist of five in the manufacturing category.

Gainful employment is currently generated directly for a team of 22 as well as tried-and-trusted subcontractors on larger projects. “Continuous staff training is very important, particularly when you are branching into new products and systems,” says Trevor. “That’s ongoing, with training courses organised twice yearly, while being based in Athlone offers better opportunities and benefits to our employees.”

Looking to the future, Trevor says consolidation is his main objective as opposed to further growth: “We’re close to full capacity again and you can only take on so much work at any given time,” he concludes. “We’re focused on keeping our standards high to maintain our reputation. Sometimes less is more. We have to maintain high standards on every single job. If you take your eye off the ball, even for a second, it would reflect badly on Mahon Windows.”

Given Mahon Windows’ immaculate track record for excellence, it’s extremely unlikely this will happen!
