Operating with 280 staff, MTM Engineering is a Specialist Electrical Contractor which has completed large scale industrial and renewable projects in Ireland, The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, UK, Israel and Australia. Building Ireland touched base with Managing Director Brendan Mee to learn more about the company.
Business is good right now at MTM Engineering and, as things stand, the Co-Meath based company is targeting further expansion in the European market.
Headquartered in Grangegeeth, Slane, Co Meath, the family-run concern specialises in Cable Route Design, Containment installation, HV, MV and LV cable installation and termination and cable testing on an industrial scale.
Many of the companies clients are involved in the data centre and pharmaceutical industries and from humble beginnings, the business has grown over the years to where they now employ 280 staff.
Founded by Martin and Patricia Mee in 1997, MTM Engineering is now very much a multi-national company which has been able to show significant growth in recent years by delivering projects to the highest of standards, for the best value and within the target programmes and budgets.
Managing Director, Brendan Mee told Building Ireland all about the company and the state of business at the moment.
“It has obviously been tougher this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic but business is still going strong,” outlined Brendan.
“We’re spread across Europe now working on data centre and infrastructure project, with projects on-going in Demark, Sweden, Finland and The Netherlands.
“We have 170 guys working around Europe at the moment.”
That’s a far cry from where MTM Engineering started out 23 long years ago.
Started up by Brendan’s parents, Martin and Patricia, the company began with a small business model and as the years went by it grew and grew.
“My parents started the business and in those days, we were a small firm concentrating on cable installation and termination, but as the business grew so did the workforce,” Brendan explained.
MTM Engineering now have a team of professionals, many of who have risen through the ranks of the company, that allows them to deliver projects from Electrical and Civil design through to final handover and commissioning on sectors including Pharmaceutical, Data Centres, Wind Farms, Renewables, Incinerators, Manufacturing, Hospitals, Power Station’s and Commercial Projects.
“We are now in a position to provide a wide range of services to a diverse scope of clients in different industries,” said the MD.
“By completing projects not only to the highest standards, but on time and within the budget limit has certainly helped enhance our reputation not only in Ireland, but in other countries as well.”
Delivering on projects time and time again has been “the key to success”, according to Brendan.
By working to the highest electrical standards on the largest projects in many different countries, MTM Engineering has built up a customer base that has helped it grow into a reputable Specialist Electrical Contracting company.
Government lockdown this past March certainly effected business but this rapidly growing company is now looking towards the future, going by what its MD has to say.
“We’re looking to go back to full operation and back to growing the company,” said Brendan.
“The lockdown affected us but we got through and now we’re looking at further expansion on the European market.
“We’ve always had a commitment to make our work safer here and increase the quality and we’re continually developing new ideas.
One of those initiatives has saw MTM Engineering offer its clients an app which shows them cable installation on their project from start to finish. The app has been live for 18 months now.
You can be sure the ideas won’t stop their either, with the MTM team boasting an excellent track record thus far.
Brendan stressed that one of the company’s main focuses has always been employee satisfaction and ensuring that their employees are well looked after in every aspect of the job.
“We would have a low turnover when it comes to our workforce. Many of the lads here would be with us for years, with many of them serving their time as apprentices and staying on with us,” he said.
“There is a phrase we use which is the ‘MTM Way’ and this is where we instil a belief amongst the workers to look out for each other and what I mean by this is that working as a team gets the work done more efficiently and to a higher standard. We do a lot of in-house training here. We actually have a mock construction site at our headquarters in Slane where we carry out training.
“We try to grow from within the company and that is why we focus on apprenticeships. There are 25 people here at the moment on apprenticeships. During the recession, it was almost impossible to get skilled workers as a lot were forced to leave the country, but now that there is a pick up in the work load here, they still haven’t returned and there is a shortage of tradesmen in the country.”
Brendan added that the dawn of the recession brought about great change in the company as they were forced to look elsewhere for work.
“It wasn’t until 2012 that we started focusing on Europe and it did take a while to get established in other countries, but we stuck at it and we are delighted with the progress that we have made since then.”
Accreditation wise, MTM are continuously reviewing their methods of management, and the delivery of their projects. They involve their whole company in this process and, as such, the whole team take ownership of their achievements.
“We have internationally recognised accreditations such as the Safe-T-Cert, Grade A, VCA* 2008/5.1, ISO 9001:2008, (Quality Management Systems) ISO 14001:20040 (Environmental management Systems). We were also the first electrical contracting company in Ireland to achieve the ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems),” concluded the Managing Director.
