Durkin Bros Ltd celebrates 45 years

Durkin Bros Ltd has been built on the reputation and integrity of the Durkin family over the past 45 years. From humble beginnings, the AECI, RECI and Safe Electric certified company has grown to employ 25 staff directly and can employ a further 60 subcontractors at any one time. The contractor’s electricians are highly-skilled and creative people who take great pride in their work.

“The company was founded by my father Tommy and his brother Michael,” explains project manager Aiden Durkin.

“While Michael is now retired, Tommy is still involved as managing director. My brother Robert is also a site foreman with the company. Being a family business, we’re able to offer our customers the personal touch that you don’t get from larger organisations. We’ll go the extra mile for them if we have to.

“We provide a quality, punctual and value-for-money service, and have a great team who are passionate about what they do. Our proven ability to complete projects on time and within budget is borne out by the large volume of repeat business we receive. No job is too big or too small.”

The Sligo-based concern has carried out numerous substantial projects in the residential, commercial, industrial, retail, healthcare and educational sectors, and enjoys an excellent working relationship with some of the country’s leading construction firms, including Sammon Developments, JJ Rhatigan and Glenman Corporation.

Past projects include Scoil Naomh Molaise in Grange, Co. Sligo, St. Oliver’s Post Primary School in Oldcastle, Co. Meath, Homeland in Sligo, Nazareth House residential units in Sligo, Caltragh housing development in Caltragh, Co. Durkin Bros Ltd recently completed its largest-ever school contract at the new €20.8 million Colaiste Chiarain in Athlone.  JJ Rhatigan was the main contractor on the project which consisted of the design and build of a new three-storey 10,000m2 post primary school building, associated car parking access road, demolition of existing school and associate storage and auxiliary buildings. Works also included the relocation of the existing prefabricated school building for the duration of the school construction, construction of external ball courts, landscaping, connection to public services and all associated siteworks. The client was the Department of Education & Skills.

“We were awarded the full electrical package, including security, lighting and BMS systems, for this project which took a year to complete. We had a crew of up to 40 working onsite,” Aiden says.

The company has also just completed electrical works on 14 apartments at Cartron Road in Sligo on behalf of Sligo County Council and on the new three-storey Sligo Credit Union, which was formerly the Clarence Hotel. Sammon Developments was the main contractor on these projects.

In addition, Durkin Bros Ltd was the electrical contractor on a 33-unit social housing scheme for Westmeath County Council at Arcadia in Athlone which was completed within a few weeks of the national lockdown being lifted in May. Glenman Corporation was the main contractor on this project.

Health & Safety has always been paramount at Durkin Bros Ltd and never more so than in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. The firm places a strong emphasis on Health & Safety and conducts its business with a safety-first policy.
