McDonagh Construction Ltd, a family run, three generation business with over 30 years experience delivering High-quality New home builds, extensions, renovations, restorations, government, and commercial projects.

Established in 1991 by the late Joe McDonagh and his son Hughie, who is now joined by his son Hugh, McDonagh Construction Ltd is an established and trusted leading name in general construction and refurbishment in Galway city and county.

Based in Salthill, the third-generation, family-run business was recently honoured with an Excellence in Business Award for 30 years in business. The Excellence in Business Awards 2021 were awarded to companies who demonstrate outstanding service, continuity, track record and general excellence in business to the Public Sector, Irish Companies, and to the people of Ireland.

McDonagh Construction continues to evolve and go from strength to strength. Hughie holds PSCS role on all projects, is highly-trained, experienced, innovative and adaptive, and continues to keep on top of the ever-changing building regulations, materials and trends.

Operating in the residential, government and commercial sectors, the company prides itself on delivering efficient, cost-effective, high-quality projects on-time and within budget.

Years of experience in the construction industry has given McDonagh Construction an acute understanding of the importance of meeting its clients’ needs no matter the size or scale of the project. Over the past three decades, the company has successfully completed projects ranging from minor works to multi-million euro contracts.

Superior workmanship, attention to detail, the maintenance of consistently exacting standards and a commitment to collaborating closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction on projects are the hallmarks of McDonagh Construction.

Health & Safety is at the core of the business, and never more so than in this Covid-19 age. From concept to completion, Hughie and his team of top-class tradesmen are with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs and budgets, and where if possible, any savings can be made. All of their work complies with the highest current industry regulations.

Regardless of project size, McDonagh Construction’s approach remains the same, whether your next project is a renovation, retro-fit, extension, new build, or re-roofing project, McDonagh Construction’s one-stop-shop approach will ensure that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable, and hassle-free.

The Salthill contractor’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from architects and satisfied customers.

“Client satisfaction is the keystone on which our business is built,” Hughie says.

“We employ eight people directly and use the same tried and trusted sub-contractors and Professionals’’ Hughie said.

“By employing highly-skilled and experienced people, and by working closely with our team of professionals, and suppliers and sourcing the very best value on building products, we are able to deliver the highest quality construction projects to our clients.

“We also enjoy an excellent working relationship with suppliers such as T. O’ Higgins Hardware, Brooks, Chadwick’s, Roadstone and Moy Materials, and with our Architects and Engineers, who include Conor Slack of Tribe Architects, Ruairc Ó Tuairisg Engineer and Collins Boyd Architects.”

A long-standing member of the CIF and CIRI registered, McDonagh Construction also boasts an impressive client-base which includes the OPW, Department of Defence, AXA Insurance, NUIG, Gmit Galway, Connacht Rugby, Mystical Rose Nursing Home Fire Upgrading Works and Burkeway Homes.

“We have been providing a 24/7 Home emergency callout repair service for AXA since 2007,” explains the affable managing director, whose son Hugh is studying Construction Management at the Atlantic Technological University, and will join the family business full-time when he graduates.

“We also carry out a lot of refurbishment work on behalf of the OPW.

“Our work is split 50/50 between the private and commercial sectors. House renovations are extremely popular at the moment due to a scarcity of sites, especially in and around Galway city, and the huge costs associated with building from scratch.

“The cost of building materials is rapidly rising as a result of the pandemic and this is being acutely felt in the new build sector.  Material and labour shortages continue to be a huge issue in the industry. We do our absolute best for our clients to obtain the best value possible on materials in order to provide a competitive cost for their project.”

Some of McDonagh Construction’s recently completed projects include a major refurbishment of a protected structure the Quays Bar in Galway and during the pandemic it worked on a substantial renovation and refurbishment works to what was a derelict building ‘Teach an Phosta’ in Inverin, Co Galway with the support of the Department of Housing and Galway County Council. The unit now consists of two, two-bed and two one-bed apartments which are being provided as long-term rental housing units to persons who are on the Galway County Council housing wait list.

The essential project was carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic in collaboration with project manager Micheál Ó Dubhain and Collins Boyd Architects, and is the contractor’s second social housing project brought to completion, having delivered 12 derelict units in Greenfields, Roscommon town in 2018.

In addition, McDonagh Construction has just recently completed a refurbishment project for the Department of Arts, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht in Furbo.

Commenting on McDonagh Construction’s current projects, Hughie says: “We have recently started a complete renovation of a 3,500 sq. ft. dwelling in Furbo for Conor Slack of Tribe Architects. We are also roofing apartment blocks for Burkeway Homes in Rahoon and re-roofing a property over a Tesco Express on the Headford Road for a property management company through Ruairc Ó Tuairisg. We are very busy, thank God.”

McDonagh Construction invests a lot in its staff training plan to ensure relevant certifications are maintained and that they stay current with the latest construction techniques, materials advances, and regulations. The company strives to ensure all personnel and sub-contractors have the appropriate experience, expertise, and equipment to perform their duties to the highest standards. Its foremen ensure this highest quality standard is upheld at all times.

It also has very capable apprentices employed on our team to ensure that the skilled trades are taught first-hand and in the hope that these skilled trades are passed onto future generations.

Furthermore, the family-run concern operates a strict policy of ‘Safety First’ at all times on-site and is proud of its exemplary Health & Safety record.
