An impressive track record of competence and experience

Sandar Construction’s enthusiasm and pride in their work ensures that every project they undertake receives the attention it deserves. They have a long list of satisfied clients which can vouch for this. Building Ireland spoke to company director Leigh Jackson to find out more.

There is evidence to suggest that the upturn in the construction industry is spreading its wings beyond Dublin and Sandar Construction of Cavan is perfectly positioned to capitalise on the new-found confidence in the market.

Sandar Construction is a reputable family owned building contracting company within the Irish construction industry, first established in 1999.

With Managing Director Jimmie Jackson and his sons, Leigh and Jonathon, at the helm, the progressive company undertakes projects throughout Ireland. It has completed numerous projects across a broad range of sectors having successfully completed projects in both the public and private sectors with the scope of work varying in type and size from multimillion projects to small and medium size contracts.

“Certainly, things have picked up over the last number of years and we’re beginning to see the benefits of that,” Leigh Jackson commented. “The private sector is showing signs of improvement and that is always a positive. Public sector work was a bit of a battle there for a couple of years but now the private sector is coming back strongly and that is to the benefit of everybody involved in construction.”

Sandar Construction have successfully managed to strike the right balance between public and private sectors work and, importantly from a cost point of view, the company’s travelling expenses have been dramatically reduced!

“For last five years the majority of the work was centred around Dublin. As a Cavan-based company that meant a lot of travelling for our men. We are now seeing the lift in the sectors finding its way down as far as counties Meath and Cavan and it is spreading out further.

“We’re hoping that trend will continue. We’re picking up work which is local to Cavan and that’s good to see. On a negative note, we’re in the process of trying to recruit senior management staff and a QS but the shortage of labour in the industry at the minute is a big challenge.”

Sandar Construction’s current workload includes extensions to St Michael’s NS, Trim, Co Meath and Scoil Mobhi, Skerries, Co Dublin as well as refurbishment work on Cordners Shoe Shop which is located in Navan, Co Meath.

“Also ongoing is a major 1,500 square metre fit-out in Cavan town that we are halfway through,” Leigh added. “It’s a really high spec office finish.

“We started on site on St Michael’s NS in Trim on Monday, January 8th last and that is a 12 month programme which we hope to hand over before next Christmas. We’re three quarters of the way through the Scoil Mobhi project which is a three class room extension with resource rooms and new teacher facilities.”

Providing employment to 16 directly and numerous sub-contractors, Sandar provides a highly professional, motivated construction team which is dedicated to achieving the highest standards of quality.

They pride themselves in their work and it is their aim to shun complacency to provide their clients with a quality service, completing projects to the highest standards, on time and within budget, through safe and environmentally friendly practices.

The company boasts a number of accreditations. Their quality management system conforms with the requirements of ISO 9001;2008. They also take a very disciplined approach to maintaining the environment and are committed to reducing the environmental impact from their work, a system which is ISO 14001;2004 accredited.

The company’s track record of competence and experience as a building contractor is acknowledged in its inclusion into CIRI (Construction Industry Register of Ireland).

They are dedicated in maintaining a safe working environment for all their employees and others who may be affected by their activities, which is implemented through their safety management system. Their strong Health and Safety standards are recognised in their A Grade Safe-T-Cert accreditation, the highest level achievable.

Over the years, the skills and management base of the company has evolved and developed. They believe that management is about getting the right people for the particular task. Their success over the years is due to the dedication and commitment of both staff and workforce. The result is quality at every stage of construction.

“Our reputation stands us in good stead and we’ve a good reputation built up at this stage. Even through open tendering for public sector work, architects that we’ve worked with in the past would approach us about submitting a tender. They are obviously happy with our previous work and the fact that we have experience across a number of sectors – schools, industrial, commercial and fit-outs – is a big plus.

“We’ve a good reputation because of that and gain contracts and projects through a reputation that we’re delighted with,” Leigh concluded.
