Gleeson Steel & Engineering specialises in the fabrication and erection of structural steel and cladding for the industrial, commercial, agricultural and leisure sectors.

The family run business was established in 1968 by Murty and Alice Gleeson and their sons PJ and Tomas are the managing directors these days.
For this month’s edition of Building Ireland, we profile the company and speak to Nicky Sweeney about the success of the business and his own role.

Through hard work and providing a quality service, Gleeson’s have become one of the leading steel fabricators in the Munster region.

“Our products and services have evolved over the years as we meet the demands that the competitive steel market throw at us on a daily basis. Today we aim to supply quality products, using the most sophisticated design and development tools,” said Nicky who looks after the purchasing, tendering and sales side of the business.

With almost 50 years’ experience in the fabrication and erection of a wide range of structural steel buildings for the various sectors, Gleeson Steel & Engineering have established a first-class reputation within this industry through a balance of competitive prices, commitment to quality, customer satisfaction and proven capabilities.

Engineering Services include Structural Steel Solutions, Farm Buildings, Storage Cabinets And Kiosks, Gates And Fences, Architectural Steel Work, Shotblasting and Powder Coating. Agricultural Equipment manufactured by the company includes Land Levellers, Troughs, Bogies for Fertiliser Spreaders, Calf Creeps, Log Splitters, Crush Gates, Field Gates, Dehorning Crates, Drinkers, Cubicles, Mats, Feeding Barriers, Dividing Gates and Hangers.

When it comes to farm building, the Tipperary based firm are unrivalled in the south as their services have been required all over Munster and further afield.

“We have a wealth of experience in the agricultural sector and a lot of our work would be in this area. From the design stage right until the work is completed, we work with the customer to ensure that they are happy with the work we are doing,” added Nicky.

With a 24,600sq ft plant, which contains the most modern equipment, Gleeson Steel & Engineering has the necessary equipment to provide structural steel and general solutions to all clients.

“Our equipment and facilities include a Saw and CNC Drill Line, a CNC Angle Line and a Powder Coating Plant.  We recently installed an Industrial Spray Paint Booth, complete with Extractor Units and an Air Flow Heating System.

There are many regulations to be adhered too when it comes to working with steel and Nicky added that they are compliant in all areas.

“We would have all the necessary certificates to manufacture our products from the department spec S101 standard to the E.U and C.E traceability markings that have come into the industry. There is a lot more paperwork these days, but it is for the benefit of the industry and we have met all the requirements asked of us,” he added.

Two years ago, Gleeson’s achieved compliance with the requirements of I.S. EN1090-1:2009 + A1:2011 for CE marking of Structural Steel, up to Execution Class 2 (EXC 2) which covers the fabrication of most of the structural steel used in Ireland and the UK.

Health and Safety is of course a big issue and Gleeson’s leave no stone unturned when it comes to ensuring that all requirements on this front are met. “It is our duty to carry out all works in conformance with all Health & Safety Legislation, Construction regulations and insurance requirements.”

Nothing but the best of materials are used when Gleeson’s are manufacturing any of their products and great care is taken when sourcing these materials from reputable firms.

“We source all of our materials from long established, quality suppliers and can offer lengthy warranties to all our customers. Client lists include building firms, consulting engineering practises and corporations throughout Ireland and the UK.”

Of course, the success of the business would not have been achieved without a reliable and highly trained workforce, with many of the 30 employees being on the books for many years.

“We would have a very experienced workforce, many of who have been with us years now. They have played a huge part in the success of the company.”

Gleeson Steel & Engineering has built an impressive reputation for supplying structural steel solutions to clients to not only the agricultural industry, but to the commercial and sports sectors too.

From leisure complexes, viewing stands to club houses and community centres, every project is given the same attention to detail from start to finish.

“Our aim is to make the process of purchasing your building as smooth as possible, while also achieving the end result you will be expecting and be proud of. We offer all our customers assistance with the design, planning and choosing of the correct materials. Our buildings are detailed by our experienced team of steel detailers. All units are designed to meet your needs and intended use. A full after sales service is also provided.”

Gleeson’s pride themselves on producing high quality products, which live up to the high expectations of all their clients.

Both staff and machinery adhere to the highest safety regulations.  The employees are trained and certified in every aspect of steel fabrication, facilitating the delivery of steel products, measured and cut to precision.
