Finna Construction Ltd in Co Mayo has amassed a reputation as a professional and reliable construction company based with many years of experience across the whole spectrum of the Industry. Building Ireland heard more from company co-director Concepta Lydon.

For more than a decade now, Co Mayo-based firm Finna Construction Ltd has been building itself an impressive portfolio of construction projects throughout Ireland.

The company has successfully completed projects for both private and public sector clients and have experience in commercial, retail, residential and maintenance work.

Set-up by husband and wife partnership Vincent and Concepta Lydon in 2003, Finna Construction became a limited company three years later and has since earned itself a solid reputation for excellence in its work.

Concepta told Building Ireland what they’re all about when we caught up with one half of the company’s directorship recently.

“We’re based in the village of Cross near Cong, Co Mayo and there are 20 team members working along with us, many that have been with us for a long time and my husband Vincent and I are the directors,” she explained.

“We mainly work for local authorities and pubic bodies but in recent times we have also been working on the restoration of an old Georgian manor in Co Dublin, where we provided site management and skilled craftsmen to deliver the traditional building trades required for the conservation and restoration of heritage property.

“When Vincent set-up the company he had served his time as a carpenter and took the decision to fulfil his passion and go out on his own then in 2003.”

Finna Construction Ltd values providing dedicated close attention to client requirements highly and their flexibility during construction has held them in good stead for progressive expansion.

The company’s range of clients has enhanced its management of construction projects as they have dealt with numerous scenarios and tailored their construction management techniques to suit.

With a highly skilled workforce at its disposal, Finna Construction Ltd employs an excellent management team and craftsmen in their individual fields and their staff work well as a team to produce impressive results on all of the company’s building projects which often exceeds clients’ expectations.

What the company prides itself most on however is its ability to deliver a high quality finish on time and within the agreed budgets. They believe that their close attention to detail and commitment to resolving issues to the complete satisfaction of clients is what sets them apart from other competitors.

That’s being reflected right now, as Concepta confirmed that the company is as busy as ever at the present with their staff numbers having swelled considerably since the economic downturn, which stung the construction Irish construction industry so sorely from 2008.

“Right now we are quite busy and it’s great to have that,” Concepta stated.

“We continuously worked through the downturn and would have done a lot of work with our local County Councils and I suppose around 2014 things started to turn around again. Our staff numbers increased to 20 and, thankfully, we have been going strong ever since.”

The team at Finna Construction Ltd is dedicated to ensuring that their on-site performance exceeds their clients’ expectations, with a high regard for safety.

Needless to say, safety is paramount and they prioritise a safe working environment for staff, sub-contractors, consultants and end-users and are also committed to eliminating risk that may be to the detriment of their employees and partners alike.

Finna Construction Ltd constantly strives to instil safety awareness on all of its projects and continue to comply with the Safety, Health and Welfare Act.

The company have an excellent safety record and believe in working closely with all of its partners to ensure the safest environment during construction. They have operated a Safe-T-Cert Certified Safety Management System and Safety Policy to ensure a safe working environment for all employees and the public on our projects for the past number of years.

Past projects for the business have included work in Mountbellew Fire Station, Loughrea Fire Station, Carraroe Fire Station for the Galway County Council Fire Department.

These entailed the demolition of an existing Weighbridge Compound and platform; the construction of a steel framed extension; installation of site drainage and resurfacing of the existing fire station roofs.

Day-to-day operations of the existing fire stations also had to be maintained during construction. The company is now working on the construction of a new Fire Station in Ferbane in Co Offaly, along with a handful of other projects, as Concepta explained.

“We’re building a fire station in Ferbane for Offaly County Council and we’re also just finished on a new building at Fairy House Racecourse in Ratoath,” she stated.

“We’re also doing some renovation work at Connemara National Park for OPW, working on a restoration project in County Dublin and refurbishing houses for Galway County Council.

“We have recently completed, for Galway County Council, a project to refurbish 15 properties and common area in a housing estate which had required considerably more work than normal to bring them up to a suitable standard. In essence, each house was brought back to a shell and refurbished from there.

In the space of 11 years, Finna Construction have managed to amass an impressive list of clients which continue to give their company repeat business.

“We have loyal clients that have been with us for years and we’re grateful for their work and I’m sure they appreciate the job we do for them as well,” said Concepta.

So what’s the secret to starting a construction firm pre-recession, coming through the downturn and thriving with the same clients you first started with in the upturn?

“We started our company pre-boom and worked as building contractors and also did carpentry subcontracting,” explained the co-director.

“We’re efficient and we focus on value a lot while at the same time being compliant. We’re always aiming towards a high standard here.”
