Fences offer privacy, security, safety, aesthetics and a solid investment for your home or business. There are many various type of fencing available and although it is up to the customer to choose their preferred choice, fencing contractors are there to offer advice all the time.

One of the country’s leading fencing contractors is the family run Duncan Fencing who are operating mainly on motorway projects nationwide.
Established in 1999 by Brian & Mary Duncan, the business has grown from humble beginnings to being involved with many of the country’s top building firms.

Hailing from a farming background, Brian  diversified into fencing contracting work and he revealed to us the areas that they specialise in.

“We do a substantial amount of industrial fencing on large sites and on motorways as well as temporary fencing and services on gas lines,” said Brian who runs the business along with his wife Mary.

Based in Garryduff, Dungourney, Co Cork, the company operates throughout the 32 counties and they can assure their customers of versatility and professional work which is completed on time with excellent quality.

Other projects such as landscaping, land reinstatement, land reclamation and sport field insulation are carried out throughout the country by the company.

“We provide a wide range of services to our ever increasing customer base. These services include Sound Barrier & All Types of Fencing Supplied & Erected, Sports Grounds Fencing, Specialise in Motorway Timber Post & Rail, Railings, Mesh System, Palisade all at competitive rates, fully insured.

“We are able to offer you a wide choice for all your fencing needs from railings to timber or indeed if you are looking for additional security we are able to offer a range of mesh type fencing products.”

“We are one of Ireland’s leading fencing contractors and provide services throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland from our base in Cork. Over the years, we have been involved in many prestigious contracts.”

A selection of these projects includes their first in 1999 when they were involved in erecting of fencing for the gas pipeline from Glanmire to Ballincollig for PJ Hegarty.

In 2001, they carried out their first motorway project as they completed 20km of timber and post fencing, plus 1.5km of concrete fencing for Ascon.

As the years progressed, so too did the size of the contracts with projects completed on the Bruff-Gort Gas pipeline where 200km of fencing was erected.

Gas pipeline and motorway fencing has been the company’s speciality and in recent years, Duncan Fencing has been worked of M3 Kells Bypass for SIAC Ferrovial, N69 Tralee Bypass for BAM, N25 Waterford By-Pass,  N9 Waterford to Knocktopher,  M8 Cashel,  N2 Ashbourne By-Pass,  N6 Galway to Ballinasloe,  N18 Gort to Crusheen,  The Gort to Tuam Bypass for John Sisk & Roadbridge and many more completing over 1400km of fencing on motorways in Ireland.

In 2007, Duncan Fencing U.K was established and this saw the company extend their business to the North where they were involved in projects such as the Ballygawley to Dungannon road improvement scheme; the Newry Bypass and many more.

Currently, Duncan Fencing are working on the M11 Enniscorthy Bypass as well as the N25 New Ross Bypass and on the N5 Castlebar to Westport Advanced site clearance contract.

Away from motorways and gas pipelines, the family run business which employs 27 workers have contracts and completed contracts for railings and mesh fencing in the new Cork Prison, Limerick Prison, Irish Distillers, Alexion Dublin and Athlone,  Jazz Pharmaceuticals Athlone, DPD, Pairc Ui Chaoimh, several schools and for Irish Rail.

A relatively new area where the company have been working on are windfarms for John Sisk both here and in the U.K.

“We would normally have four crews operating and the amount of lads in each crew depends on the size of the job. Most of the lads are with us a good few years and they are very experienced at what we do. Our employees are very conscientious and take great pride in their work.”

The company has a modern fleet of plant and machinery and Brian added that they upgrade on a regular basis.

“We look after the plant we have, but we have begun upgrading again, as it is important to ensure that we have a good working fleet.”

Brian added that the majority of their materials are bought in Ireland where possible. “Ninety per cent of our timber is bought from Woodfab in Aughrim, Co Wicklow. All of our creosote timber comes from PDM in Kildare.

“We source our steel fencing in the U.K from a number of manufacturers.”
