26 Nov , 2015

Celebrating over 45 years in business in 2015, Paul Flynn Construction in Ballinasloe, Co Galway continues to be a success story in spite of some tough times for the industry. Director Tara Flynn spoke to Building Ireland about their family-run business.

Family-run businesses are often best and Paul Flynn Construction in Co. Galway is another shining example to add to the list.

Based in Ballinasloe, they have been providing a professional service since 1975, building and developing projects in the Connacht region and all over Ireland. Despite the downturn in the construction industry in 2008 business is thriving at the moment with projects on the horizon that will help maintain the momentum for the business.

Originally started by Paul Flynn Snr 45 years ago, the company has moved from focusing on residential to concentrating on educational and commercial projects. This move to educational and commercial projects has kept them busy throughout the downturn and still sees them busy today as there are more of these projects in the pipeline for 2016

Tara from Paul Flynn Construction commented: “It’s a family run business. Paul Snr founded the company initially and since then his sons Paul Jnr, Chartered Civil Engineer, Mark, Project Manager, John, Civil Engineer and Tara, Office and Business Manager joined the company. Paul Flynn Construction was founded mainly to work on private housing but that has changed since 2008 and we have diversified into educational, commercial and healthcare projects.”

The belief upheld within the company sees the importance of meeting the clients’ needs in an honest and professional manner, thus Paul Flynn Construction has a consistent track record as a high quality builder and developer who delivers quality projects within budget and time schedules.

Through successfully completing many projects, Paul Flynn Construction has also built-up a good working relationship with numerous Architects, Engineers, Sub-Contractors and Suppliers.

Garbally College, Ballinasloe, Clarinbridge National School, St. Aidans National School, Tallaght, Pope John Paul NS Malahide and Rockwell College, Tipperary are some of the school projects which Paul Flynn Construction have successfully completed recently.

Tara explained that business is in fact thriving at the minute. New ground has recently been broken on a new project, St. Sylvesters Junior School Malahide.

“St Sylvester’s in Malahide is a major project for us right now. This project is our largest project since the downturn and is going to keep us extremely busy for the remainder of the year. Works on Davitt College Castlebar has also commenced.

Their professional approach, reliable service and competitive pricing are three key aspects as to why Paul Flynn Construction are chosen first for some of the above projects. That and the quick time frame in which they get the job done makes them first choice for the decision makers on these projects.

“There’s definitely a strict time frame with these projects and the idea is to get the project started as soon as possible and completed within the agreed timeframe whilst ensuring that the work completed is to very high standards.” said Tara.

The company’s track record makes for good reading too, with hundreds of jobs being carried out to excellent standards down through the years. Paul Flynn Snr continues today to work on site for the company and is as committed as ever to maintaining the standards that have been a cornerstone of the company for the past 45 years.

“My father started the company in a time when so many Irish went over to the UK and came back with a lot of knowledge of the construction industry,” she said.

“When he started the company all those years ago it was a different time and the company solely focused on the residential sector. The company has progressed over the years and now focuses on educational and commercial projects and are quiet happy with how the business is progressing.” With its owner still involved after 45 years, it’s no stretch to say that Paul Flynn Construction has been a success story and the fact that it has evolved from the private housing sector with a new generation on board speaks volumes about their willingness to keep things running smoothly.

Paul Flynn Construction has shown great diversity over the years to branch out into the educational redevelopment market together with the Civil Engineering sector and has also expanded into different sectors of construction.

This places them in a great position to further expand their portfolio in the path that lies ahead. Another certainty we can rely on is that Paul Flynn Construction will very much remain a family run business into the future.
