M&D Fennelly Ltd is a leading professional plumbing and heating company based in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. It’s run by brothers Michael and Dermot Fennelly, who are members of one of the GAA’s most famous families.

Just as the Fennelly name is synonymous with hurling and winning All-Irelands, it is also synonymous with plumbing and heating contracting thanks to M&D Fennelly Ltd, which has been trading successfully since 1984. Employing 25 staff, the company provides a complete range of plumbing and heating services throughout the South-East and guarantees a top-class, experienced, responsive, reliable and competitive service delivered on time and within budget.

With a skilled and versatile team of professionals, the Co. Kilkenny contractor offers a wealth of experience and expertise, is equipped to take on contracts of all sizes, and boasts an impressive portfolio of work. M&D Fennelly Ltd prides itself on its quality, attention to detail and value-for-money service. Furthermore, its staff engage in constant upskilling to keep abreast of all the latest developments in the industry.

As industrial plumbing, heating and gas specialists, the company works for clients in both the public and private sectors. Whether it’s gas installation, pipe and equipment maintenance or general repair work, it has the specialist expertise for your business or project. Its range of services include heating installation, plumbing, gas line / oil line heating, direct fire gas heating, underfloor heating, solar piping and installation, plant rooms and sanitary ware installation. Its staff are METAC-trained for the installation of solar systems.

“We’re authorised gas installers who work primarily in the industrial sector,” Michael Fennelly explains.

“We also have a number of domestic customers and are involved in new builds as well as refurbishment and maintenance work. We have five vehicles covering the South-East region and have the tools and equipment to cater for any job. Our location in Thomastown Business Park, which is where we’ve been based since 2008, leaves us within easy reach of all our customers.”

M&D Fennelly Ltd has recently completed the following school projects: Ballingarry Presentation Secondary School in Co. Tipperary for Kilcawley Construction; Holy Family School in Rathcoole, Co. Dublin for Ganson Building & Civil Engineering; St. Brigid’s College, Callan, Co. Kilkenny for Ormonde Construction; Scoil Bhride in Rathangan, Co. Kildare for Purcell Construction; St. Laurence’s National School, Crookstown, Co. Kildare for Purcell Construction; Tallow National School, Co. Waterford and St. John’s National School in Kilkenny (both refurbs).

The contractor also recently carried out works at St. John’s Community Hospital in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford for Clancy Construction and at Waterford Fire Station for Duggan Brothers. In addition, it provides ongoing maintenance at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny and St. Dympna’s Hospital in Carlow for the HSE.

Both plumbers by trade, Michael and Dermot were also talented hurlers in their youth and have the medals to prove it. Along with their other brothers Ger, Kevin, Brendan, Liam and Sean, they contributed enormously to the phenomenal success enjoyed by Ballyhale Shamrocks in the two decades which followed the amalgamation of the old Ballyhale and Knocktopher clubs in 1972.

Ballyhale Shamrocks won an incredible nine Kilkenny SHC titles in the 13 years from 1978 to ’91, with all seven Fennelly brothers playing their part in this hugely impressive run. The brothers also played in the south Kilkenny club’s three All-Ireland victories between 1981 and ’90, while each of them represented Kilkenny at senior level. Liam, Ger and Kevin enjoyed the most success with the Cats, winning three All-Ireland medals each, with Liam captaining two All-Ireland winning teams and Ger captaining one.

There is now a new generation of Fennellys making their mark on the hurling and camogie pitches of Kilkenny and beyond. Michael’s sons Michael Jnr and Colin are household names in the sport, having won a combined 12 All-Ireland senior inter-county medals and six All-Ireland club medals. When Ballyhale Shamrocks won the fifth of their six All-Ireland club titles in 2010, Michael Snr was the manager and Michael Jnr and Colin lined out at midfield and right half forward respectively.

While admitting that their hurling achievements have helped to secure work down the years, Michael is at pains to point out that this is only a very small reason behind the company’s longevity and success.

“People would know our name through the hurling, but we’d never get any repeat business if we didn’t do a good job or provide a quality service. Our ability to complete projects on time, within budget and to the client’s total satisfaction has made us the contractor of choice for over 30 years. We enjoy excellent relationships with all of our clients, many of who are repeat customers.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their loyalty and continued support,” he concludes.
